Window Scrappage Scheme - Will It Really Help?

I've mentioned a couple of times before (here and here), the companies that are inflating prices and misleading customers in to thinking they are getting a great deal under supposed 'scrappage schemes'. It seems more and more people are commenting on this line of thought.

In February's issue of The Glazine, there's an article entitled 'Are we a bunch of cowboys?'. The article describes the experience they had when contacting three different window companies to arrange for a quote. Two of the companies didn't deliver a quote: one could not come out on a Saturday and the other would not give a quote without the potential customer committing to exclusivity.
The company that would provide a quote, gave an initial quote of £19,500. This figure was for replacing 8 windows with A-rated windows. When he saw the disappointment of the customer "[he] was happy to re-work it and apply several discounts – including, so he claimed – his own staff discount. .. He eventually settled on £5,200, but this was just for the windows, and did not include the doors."
The massive difference in price of over £14,000 goes to show how inflated some quotes actually are.

The current count stands at 3,712 signatures.

Will under 10,000 signatures be enough to convince the government that this scheme is what the UK needs?

I am disappointed to see that the current number of signatures on the petition is just 2,884. I had hoped the last count would have doubled by now. If you haven't already, please please sign the petition, before March 2010.

Last post I mentioned marketing scams and the inflated offers currently being offered by a few of the UK's larger window companies under the guise of being an official scrappage scheme. I'm glad to see posts like these, on the money saving expert forums. It is good to know that some people see through these misleading and desperate attempts at gaining business.

The Window Scrappage Scheme petition now has over 2,000 signatures. This is a great start, but more support is needed. If you haven't already, please sign the petition and offer your support to the scheme which will benefit homes, the UK window industry and the environment.

You may have noticed several companies are offering 'scrappage schemes' of their own. Unfortunately, these are mostly just a marketing ploy, using a genuine scheme with good intentions to increase sales of their products. Most of these offers are not actually saving you any money. If you're unsure, get quotes from several companies and compare.

Window Scrappage Scheme Petition Nears 2000 Signatures

The Window Scrappage Scheme petition, started in September 2009 by the GGF, is fast approaching its 2000th signature.

If you haven't supported the proposal yet, add your signature now.

Here is an outline of the advantages of the scheme, as published by the Glass and Glazing Federation;

"The benefits of this scheme for window manufacturers, suppliers and installers would be increased sales and a reversal in the downward trend in the number of installed windows and doors. Consumers would save £1,000 and enjoy a facelift to their homes, along with lower fuel bills and more energy efficient homes. And the government would benefit from reduced emissions from the existing housing stock, helping it to meet the necessary greenhouse gas emissions targets. The government would also reclaim some of the grant money in VAT."

The UK Window Scrappage Scheme - What is it?

Recently, the Glass and Glazing Federation (http://www.ggf.co.uk) petitioned the government to introduce a window scrappage scheme for homes in the UK. The scheme would entail homeowners and landlords to scrap their old, poorly insulated windows, for a cash incentive of £1,000 to be used for the purchase of new energy efficient windows installed professionally.
